What Churches can do to prevent abortion
Center for Bio-Ethical Reform
Source http://www.AbortionNo.org

1. Preach frequently against America's 4000 daily abortions (If 4000 American military personnel were being killed every day in a foreign war, would any pastor worry that he might be expressing too much sorrow over that catastrophe?). Show the abortion video Harder Truth to the entire congregation during the main worship services (as hundreds of other churches have already done). To facilitate these showings, arrangements should be made to take children of elementary age and younger out of the services for the short duration of the video and adequate warnings need to be provided so adults can avert their gaze if they do not wish to view the video (which is scored with instrumental music rather than lyrics which might be disturbing to listeners who chose to look away from the screen). Tackle the "hard case" exceptions related to babies conceived in rape or incest, birth-defective babies, etc. Also show age-appropriate, pre-natal development videos (no mention of abortion) to young children to instill respect for the miracle and sanctity of human life.

2. Ensure repeated emphasis on sexual purity since 80% of abortions are performed on single women (the sin of fornication leading to the vast majority of pregnancies terminated by induced abortion). Pregnancies conceived by married women account for the remainder with some unknown percentage fathered by husbands and the rest by adulterous non-spouses). Focus on the responsibility men have to support and encourage their girl friends, wives and daughters to carry crisis pregnancies to term. Create an environment in which women in crisis pregnancy will feel safe in turning to the church instead of pagan baby-killers for help.

3. Offer ongoing Bible studies specifically designed for women and men who have committed the sin of abortion and wish to avail themselves of the healing power of scripture. These studies can be adapted for individual self-study or group-study.

4. Undertake pro-life outreach projects aimed at other church and para-church organizations as well as the secular culture.

A. Register worshipers to vote. (Explain scripture describing the fact that God consistently holds the sovereign accountable for just governance and in America today, we, the electorate, are the sovereign).

B. Inform registered voters of the positions of candidates for public office concerning issues like abortion (and explain the importance of volunteering time and donating money to support the right candidates without suggesting who they might be).

C. Conduct "get-out-the-vote" campaigns to encourage voting among registered, informed Christians.

D. Encourage worshipers to donate money and time to support pro-life activism. The church is filled with retirees who could be extremely helpful in volunteering with crisis pregnancy centers and a variety of other pro-life organizations.

Give donations to pro-life organizations in the amount of money individual worshipers would have spent on Christmas or birthday gifts and give the donations in the name of the person to whom the Christmas or birthday gift would have been given.

Give out pre-natal development videos to friends and family on Christmas card lists, etc., in the same many churches have facilitated the purchase and distribution of the "Jesus Film."

Exhort men who have paid for abortions to donate to pro-life organizations the monthly child-support payment they are not obligated to pay to since arranging their child's death.

Implore senior-citizen worshipers to remember pro-life organizations in their estate planning. One of the primary reasons we are losing the abortion battle is because pro-aborts donate hugely more money to kill babies than Christians are willing to donate to save them (frequently through estate planning).

Promote the adoption by infertile couples of "discarded" embryos which can often be successfully implanted in the uterus of an otherwise infertile woman or a woman with an infertile spouse.

Warn couples making resort to invetro fertilization that "excess" embryos are often destroyed without being implanted and "embryo reduction" abortions are urged by doctors if "too many" embryos implant in the mother's uterus.

Teach the facts concerning the abortifacient secondary effects of low-estrogen birth-control pills.

Attempt to persuade every worshiper to be a witness against evil by displaying a pro-life bumper-sticker and wearing a pro-life lapel pin at all times.

Teach a Biblically-based aversion to euthanasia and keep the congregation educated on the moral implications of new technologies like stem cell harvesting, cloning, genetic engineering, etc.

Help recruit physicians, dentists, accountants and other professionals who worship at the church to donate their services (or reduce their rates) for pro-life organizations and full-time activists.

Sponsor pro-life training conferences at the church for the purpose of equipping pastors and lay persons for more effective opposition to abortion.

Start and mentor pro-life student groups at area colleges and high schools.

Establish a "letter-to-the-editor" writing committee to monitor news publications for opportunities to communicate the pro-life point of view. This same group can also organize letter writing campaigns in which the entire congregation expresses the pro-life perspective to public officials concerning abortion-related public policy matters.

Educate and mobilize worshipers concerning economic boycott opportunities for the making of consumer decisions which discourage abortion.

5. Go to your local abortuary to pray, counsel, offer help and preach the Gospel and the full counsel of God on days when babies are being killed .

6. Most importantly, organize SERIOUS, constant, prayer and fasting projects to focus intensively on prayer for pro-life matters.

CBR condemns all abortion related violence and will not associate with groups or individuals who fail to condemn such violence.

Missouri Dinner Raises Money for Effective Pro-Life TV Commercials

Springfield, MO -- The emphasis of the Vitae Society is non-judgmental,
pro-life education. That is the theme of the television ad campaign the
Jefferson City-based organization has used, and that message has worked to
change attitudes about pregnancy and abortion, Doug Kelly of Springfield
said.

Since the commercials have begun airing in Missouri media markets, the
abortion numbers in Missouri have declined more than one-third.

Kelly has been a part of the Vitae Society since its inception 10 years
ago and he has been an important part of creating the ad campaign that now
airs in 54 television markets in 27 states.

"The hardest part is getting the message across," Kelly said, "while not
proselytizing ... just being provocative."

Thursday night at University Plaza, about 800 people came to hear that
message from a football legend. Mike Singletary, former linebacker for the
Chicago Bears and a Hall of Famer, talked about the importance of love,
prayer and courage.

Singletary, the youngest of 10 children, recalled stories from his own
youth. He talked about his mother's prayers. "I remember Mom on her knees
many nights."

He talked about his own children, their insecurities and fears. "Expect
obstacles," he tells them. "Believe in yourself ... but above all, believe
in God."

And he talked about the messages he received that lifted and gave strength
rather than tore down and condemned. "Believe that you're making a
difference," he said, praising the "creativity and sensitivity" of the
Vitae Society messages.

That is the same praise Roy Freund of Springfield had about the
organization. "It's honest numbers and honest education," he said.

Like Kelly, Freund has been involved with the Vitae Society since it
began, but he only brought his older brother, Roy Freund of Carl Junction,
into the effort about three years ago.

The Vitae Society's "low-key approach" won over Roy Freund, 73. "I felt it
was something I could be comfortable with," he said.

The Vitae Society is dedicated to educating people about abortion and
working with organizations that provide support and information to
pregnant women, Debbie Smith, coordinator of resources, said.

Thursday's dinner was part of that effort, as well as an opportunity for
people to donate to the organization.

Presenting Pro-Life Alternatives to Pregnant College Students
Source: Rochester Democrat and Chronicle; October 23, 2001

Presenting Pro-Life Alternatives to Pregnant College Students

Rochester, NY -- One of two things commonly happens when a college student
becomes pregnant: She either has an abortion or drops out of school.

The campus culture promotes this, argues Serrin Foster, president of
Feminists for Life of America, a pro-life group based in Washington, D.C.
It's a culture that says abortion is the only real choice, she says.

"Pregnancy is not socially acceptable. That's why you don't see many
visibly pregnant students on campuses," said Foster, who spoke at the
University of Rochester last night.

Foster believes colleges should do a better job of providing resources and
emotional support for pregnant women who wish to remain in school. Working
with Georgetown University a few years ago, Foster said, Feminists for
Life helped the school expand on-campus housing for pregnant students, day
care programs and maternity coverage. It became the basis for the group's
College Outreach Program, which has taken root, in varying degrees, at 450
schools, Foster said.

"Most women do not want to have an abortion. Most women do not want to
leave school," Foster said. "What we're saying with this program is,
pregnant and parenting students want and deserve other viable choices."
Health services and day care programs are available to pregnant students
at the University of Rochester.

Foster's visit to Rochester included a tour of the Susan B. Anthony House.

Foster appeared Tuesday night at the State University of New York at
Buffalo and presents her talk "The Feminist Case AGAINST Abortion" at
Hamilton College Tuesday night at 7pm.

Linda Beth Flack, a 22-year-old student at Buffalo who is helping to
organize Foster's appearance there, said pregnant students shouldn't be
pressured into sacrificing their children in order to stay in school.
"Instead of reaching out to these women, some schools turn their backs,"
Flack said. "It's a mindset that needs to be changed."

Standing on the Line Against Abortion
Source: Daily Nebraskan; October 24, 2001

Standing on the Line Against Abortion
By Simon Ringsmuth

[Pro-Life Infonet Note: Simon Ringsmuth is a student at the University of
Nebraska.]

A little more than a week ago, I took part in the annual Life Chain on O
Street. It's an hour-long event held every October where many people line
up along major streets in cities across the nation to quietly and
prayerfully oppose abortion.

I stood with two of my friends near 40th and O streets, just across from
Wyuka Cemetery. How appropriate.

On that chilly autumn day, we were not out to kill abortion doctors or
take part in any other such violent activity in the name of God or life.
We didn't do it for media attention or to piss people off. We were just
out there telling the world some very simple facts and holding our friends
and loved ones close as we talked, sang and prayed. It is given in the
First Amendment that it is the "right of the people peaceably to
assemble," and that's what the Life Chain is all about. We were assembling
peaceably and displaying messages with the hope of changing minds or
hearts.

The flimsy cardboard sign I was holding held the simple and profound
message, "Abortion Hurts Women." And it does. Abortion is seen as a cheap,
quick and effective way to terminate a pregnancy. And therein lies so many
untruths and deceptions that a simple three-word sentence is perhaps a
very effective tool for dismantling that notion. Having a vacuum cleaner
jammed into a woman's vagina and proceeding to suck out a mass of tissue
formally known as a fetus can in no way be a pleasant experience. The same
is true when a woman lets a doctor penetrate her most private area with a
metal instrument intent on crushing the skull of the child growing and
living inside of her.

To the media, abortion is a buzzword -- a way of electing or ousting our
representatives. Out on Lincoln's main drag, I held a sign which said that
abortion isn't a vague political issue but a hurting, painful, very real
issue.

My friend Evan held a sign similar to mine. It read: "Adoption, the loving
option." The general public reads that sentence and responds with a
collective "duh." So did I, before I gave it more thought. Adoption is
loving in many ways. To the couple who desperately yearns for a child but
is unable to conceive, the chance to be parents is one of a lifetime. It
is also the chance to save a life from abortion. To the teen-agers who had
no idea what they were getting themselves in to, giving their child up for
adoption is not the easiest option, but at least they will not have to
murder their offspring. And most importantly for the child inside the
woman, being adopted could very well be the best thing to ever happen to
him or her. It was for my best friend Nick, whose mom gave him up for
adoption. And it is why I am forever grateful to her for sparing her son's
life.

Evan's girlfriend Christal held the third sign on O Street, which was the
most profound of all of them. The sign simply said "Abortion Kills
Children." How incredible. Labeling the process "abortion" instead of
"murder" somehow takes it down a notch and lets us turn our heads without
guilt. The issue of whether the organism growing inside a woman is a child
is hardly matter for debate. Try to tell a mother whose child was born
weeks, even months, premature that it was a mass of tissue instead of a
baby. The argument that an unborn fetus is not a child suddenly holds no
water.

What if, as noted columnist George Will recently asked, the gestation
period was 11 months instead of nine? Dividing stages of life into neat
trimesters wouldn't work at all. What about a fetus changes from week 24
to week 25 that suddenly classifies it as a child? All the information
that makes up every aspect of the child is present from the moment of
conception, even if it doesn't happen to physically resemble a child. But
after a few weeks when hands, feet and a heartbeat begin to be discernible
inside the womb, it is absolutely undeniable that the fetus is an actual
person. A child. A human being that, as the sign said, will be killed in
an abortion. Abortion does kill children. And it does so on a scale grater
than any genocide we have ever witnessed. Abortion kills children in
numbers so huge it would make Adolf Hitler balk. More than 40 million
children have been killed since abortion was legalized in the infamous Roe
v. Wade case of 1973. You might as well eliminate the entire population of
Nebraska ten times over.

We stood on the street for just less than an hour, having arrived by
bicycle a few minutes late. It was my first real protest and my first time
taking part in a political movement outside of the voting booth. I don't
know how effective we were, but we did receive several honking horns and
thumbs-up from Lincolnites as they drove past.

Forty million people have been killed, and we are still quibbling over
whether to call them human.

Wisconsin RTL Hails Bill for Homes for Teen Moms

Wisconsin RTL Hails Bill for Homes for Teen Moms

Madison, WI -- On a vote of 92 to 0, the State Assembly passed AB 488,
legislation that would create Second-Chance Homes for teenage mothers.

Susan Armacost, Legislative Director for Wisconsin Right to Life applauded
the Assembly's action. "We are so appreciative to Rep. Sue Jeskewitz for
developing this legislation for our state. We believe that assisting
mothers and babies in need is an integral part of what it means to be
truly pro-life. This legislation is a proactive, compassionate and
life-affirming approach to addressing human problems"

It is an unfortunate fact that there are many teenage mothers or teenage
expectant mothers who have no support systems within their own families or
in the larger community. The Second Chance Home concept will provide
these young women and their babies with a stable and nuturing home
environment. At the same time, they will learn the skills they need to be
good and responsible parents and members of society.

"The Second Chance Home approach will be a real alternative to abortion to
many young women in Wisconsin," said Armacost. "We look forward to State
Senate passage of this much needed legislation."

Pro-Life Candidate Wins Special Election in So. Carolina

Columbia, SC -- Pro-life candidate Joe Wilson swept the Republican Primary
special election Tuesday with 75 percent of the vote for the 2nd
Congressional Seat vacated by the death of pro-life Congressman Floyd
Spence last August.

Wilson, 54, a state senator for the past 17 years, won in a field of five
Republican candidates. The Lexington County attorney faces a Democrat, a
Libertarian, and a Congressional Party candidate in the December 18
General Election. Wilson actively sought the support of pro-life voters
and promoted his pro-life voting record in campaign literature.

A graduate of Washington and Lee University and the University of South
Carolina Law School, Wilson is a 28-year veteran of the Army Reserves and
the SC National Guard.

Ohio CPC Having Trouble Keeping Doors Open

London, OH -- Pregnant women in this central Ohio town may be left without a
county resource -- providing free testing, counseling and supplies -- if
sufficient volunteer help does not step forward.

The center served as a resource center for Madison County residents -- providing free pregnancy tests, emotional support and counseling, maternity and baby clothes, items and diapers. According to board President Katie Mast, the center was also looking into adding a parenting class, abstinence training and a post-abortion support group.

After 16 years of helping pregnant Madison County Ohio women, the Pregnancy
Care Center of Madison County is facing the possibility of having to
permanently cease operations.

The building the center rents has changed ownership and the center was
ordered to vacate the premises Oct. 6. Unaware of the previous owner's plans
to sell, the center had no time to seek an alternate location. Also, the
center's director and lone employee recently resigned.

"Without a director, with vacancies on our Board of Directors and with few
active volunteers, we are understandably concerned about our ability to
persevere," wrote Bruce Hooley, secretary of PCC, in a letter to supporters.

The center, funded solely through private donations, suspended operations on
Sept. 20 and canceled an auction scheduled for Nov. 3. The center served as a
resource center for Madison County residents -- providing free pregnancy
tests, emotional support and counseling, maternity and baby clothes, items
and diapers.

According to board President Katie Mast, the center was also looking into
adding a parenting class, abstinence training and a post-abortion support
group.

"At this time, the board has not determined whether this stoppage of services
will be temporary or permanent," Hooley said. "We have many issues to tackle,
including the possible relocation of the center, seeking a qualified director
and determining our ability to attract additional board members and
volunteers."

There is no other center of its type in Madison County. In the last two
years, the center has provided 731 clinic visits, welcomed 243 new clients
and helped 220 pregnant woman. For similar services, Madison County residents
would need to travel to Marysville, Urbana, Circleville or Columbus.

Hooley asked supporters of the ministry to make their opinions known. The
board needs commitments from volunteers for the future to gauge if it would
be feasible to continue operations. With or without a qualified director, the
PCC cannot continue without a much stronger volunteer base.

A meeting was held Thursday to begin compiling supporters' opinions. But,
Mast said, with 23 supporters present, the board did not come to a consensus
of what happens next.

With other supporters calling or writing, Mast said the board will look at
what kind of input it received with the several issues discussed. She added
that now is the time for supporters to step into the forefront and let the
center hear from them.

"If people are interested, this is the time to express that," Mast said. "Our
determination will be largely based on what we hear from the public. We do
rely on donations and volunteers to support the center. Without those, we may
consider dissolving and sending assets to another center."

"We're not yet in the position to make a decision," Mast said. "It was too
difficult to make a decision in one evening." The board of directors
scheduled a follow-up meeting for Nov. 13.

ACTION: The Pro-Life Infonet encourages you to help keep this crisis
pregnancy center open. Please consider sending a donation to help. If you
have pro-life friends or family in the area ask them to volunteer to keep
this important ministry alive. Donations can be sent to: Pregnancy Care
Center of Madison County, PO Box 403, London, Ohio, 43140. If you are

Michigan Atty General Sued to Uphold Pro-Life Free Speech

Ann Arbor, MI -- Fifty-seven year old grandmother and pro-life activist
Ann Norton has sued Michigan's Attorney General Jennifer Granholm and
Kalamazoo county and city law enforcement officials to prevent police from
prosecuting her under a seventy year old state law prohibiting the display
of photos of murdered persons. The controversy involves a sign displaying
a graphic colored photograph of an aborted child used by Norton and
another woman while protesting on the sidewalk in front of a Kalamazoo
Planned Parenthood abortion facility. Photographs of aborted children
have been increasingly used by pro-life demonstrators to show that
abortion is a violent act, which results in the death of a child.

The Thomas More Law Center, a national public interest law firm based in
Ann Arbor, filed the federal civil rights lawsuit in the federal district
court for the Western District of Michigan on behalf of Norton challenging
the constitutionality of the Michigan law, Section 750.38 of the Penal
Code, and the acts of the police officials. The lawsuit asserts Norton's
constitutional free speech right to express her pro-life message on the
public sidewalk. Norton is seeking an injunction to permanently enjoin
the enforcement of this law, a declaration that it is unconstitutional,
and monetary damages for violation of her constitutional rights.

According to Robert Muise, associate counsel with the Thomas More Law
Center handling the case, "Ironically, by threatening to enforce this
Michigan law against peaceful pro-life demonstrators, Kalamazoo police are
in effect agreeing with the demonstrators that abortion is murder."

On October 11, 2001, Norton and her friend called the police when a
passerby tore the sign they were displaying in front of the abortion
facility. To their surprise they later discovered that the police had
charged them with violating the law for displaying the photograph of the
aborted child. Police later dropped the charges, but warned Norton not to
display the sign in the future or risk prosecution under the statue.

Named as defendants in the lawsuit besides Granholm, are the Kalamazoo
County prosecutor, the Kalamazoo Chief of the Department of Public Safety,
and several police officers. A hearing on a Temporary Restraining Order
is scheduled for November 28, 2001.

Judge Throws Out Case Against FL Choose Life Plates

Tallahassee, FL -- A judge threw out a pro-abortion lawsuit Wednesday
challenging Florida's ``Choose Life'' license plate, which abortion
advocates argue is a state-sponsored religious message.

The optional bright yellow plates went on sale last year for $70; counties
use proceeds to promote adoption over abortion. Through the end of last
month, 25,272 had been sold. State Department of Motor Vehicles spokesman
Bob Sanchez said $668,000 has been raised from sales of the plate.

Leon County Circuit Judge Nikki Ann Clark dismissed the case Wednesday,
saying the plaintiffs failed to prove the plate was unconstitutional. "No
facts are alleged to support the conclusory assertions of excessive
government entanglement with religion," Clark wrote in a terse, three-page
order.

Clark added the legal equivalent of an exclamation point by dismissing the
case "with prejudice." That means the plaintiffs cannot ask her to
reconsider her decision.

The plaintiffs, which included the pro-abortion National Organization for
Women and a Palm Beach County synagogue, said they would appeal the
decision. NOW argued the phrase ``Choose Life,'' which appears on the
plate, gives the impression that the state agrees with the pro-life
perspective.

``We have always believed this suit had no legal merit,'' said Elizabeth
Hirst, pro-life Gov. Jeb Bush's press secretary. ``People make a personal
choice to display the Choose Life license plate. It is their right as an
individual.''

Mike McCarron, executive director of the Florida Catholic Conference, was
also pleased. Putting the phrase "Choose Life" on a license plate is not
establishing a state religion, he said. "We always thought that was a
stretch."

Similar plates have been challenged by abortion advocates in South
Carolina and Louisiana.

Man Kills Infant Daughter After Girlfriend Refuses Abortion

Philadelphia, PA -- Angry that his girlfriend refused to have an abortion,
Henry Hohberger III, killed their 7-week-old daughter, authorities said
Thursday.

Police said Hohberger, 40, was baby-sitting his daughter, Nicole, on Nov.
2 when the infant died from "multiple blunt force injuries." Hohberger is
accused of shaking and beating Nicole to death while the baby's mother,
Diane Grant, was food shopping. Hohberger allegedly told a hospital worker
that he shook "the baby a little to get her to stop crying."

According to police, Hohberger took Grant to three abortion facilities
before Nicole's birth, but Grant elected to have the baby. Hohberger also
was reportedly upset that Grant had a girl, telling his ex-wife
immediately after Nicole's birth, "You don't understand, I already have a
daughter [from a previous relationship]. It's a boy. It's supposed to be a
damn boy!"

Hohberger is being held without bond. Prosecutors have not yet decided
whether to see the death penalty in the case.
